Seafood products: A maritime lever to be developed

With its two strategic ports in Tan-Tan and Sidi Ifni,
The Guelmim-Oued Noun region benefits from direct access to abundant fish stocks. However, despite being the third largest region in Morocco in terms of landing volume, the sector remains undervalued and dependent on an inefficient processing model.

Key industry data

Value chain and infrastructure

  • The current supply chain is dominated by pelagic fishing, but the majority of catches undergo minimal processing. There is a limited presence of freezing, canning, or processing facilities. The cold chain, logistics, and sorting processes need to be modernized to improve quality at the point of arrival.

Challenges and opportunities

  • Securing supply for industrial units
  • Developing aquaculture to increase local raw materials
  • Adding value to species through processing (prepared meals, canned goods)
  • Creation of an oceanographic center and Haliopole cluster in Tan-Tan
  • Positioning Sidi Ifni as a new generation artisanal fishing port
  •

Strategic projects

  • The State-Region programme contract provides for 7 major projects: port improvement, pelagic processing units, offshore fish farming, training centre, logistics platform in El Ouatia, etc.

Flagship projects and investment opportunities

  • The integrated development of the sector will involve moving up the value chain, specializing ports, continuing education, and integrating aquaculture as a strategic lever for sustainability.
